Hidden Histories: The Mystery of the Severed Heads

AAt Cadw’s Plas Mawr - In development

Project Overview

Client: Cadw
Venue: Plas Mawr
Delivery Context: On-site heritage visitor experience
Audience Reach: Families and general visitors to Plas Mawr

Hidden Histories: The Mystery of the Severed Heads is an immersive heritage experience developed for Plas Mawr, one of Britain's best-preserved Elizabethan townhouses.

Inspired by the real architectural details, heraldry and political tensions embedded within the building, the experience invites visitors to investigate a historical mystery surrounding a series of severed head crests discovered throughout the house. Through character encounters, puzzles and interactive challenges, participants uncover stories of loyalty, rebellion and identity in Elizabethan Wales.

Combining historical research, live performance and narrative-led interpretation, the project transforms a traditional heritage visit into an active investigation, encouraging visitors to engage directly with the building's architecture, symbolism and hidden stories while exploring the complex relationship between the Welsh gentry and the Tudor crown.

Our Role

Puzzle Junction is leading the creative development, narrative design and delivery of the visitor experience, working in collaboration with Cadw and the Plas Mawr site team.

Our work included:

- Researching the history, architecture and symbolism of Plas Mawr to identify compelling stories for interpretation

- Developing an original mystery narrative inspired by the house's severed head carvings and heraldic crests

- Writing an interactive script combining live performance, investigation and audience participation

- Designing puzzles, challenges and visitor tasks rooted in the physical spaces of the building

- Creating a family-friendly experience that encouraged exploration and discovery throughout the house

- Managing performer direction, rehearsals and on-site delivery

Public & Strategic Outcomes
