PJ’s Young StoryMakers
Where stories become experiences
PJ’s Young StoryMakers is an after-school creative club for children in Years 3–6, exploring storytelling, performance, design and making through the world of immersive theatre.
Unlike traditional theatre, where an audience sits and watches a story unfold on stage, immersive theatre invites the audience into the story. They might move through different spaces, meet characters, discover objects, make decisions or interact with the world around them.
That means our Young StoryMakers won't just think about what story they want to tell – they'll think about how they want someone to experience it.
What will the children do?
Each project will begin with a story. Sometimes the children will create one together through a devised process; at other times we may take inspiration from a traditional story, folktale or established text.
Working collaboratively, we'll transform that story into an immersive, interactive experience, thinking about how participants interact with the story, characters and space.
Children will have the opportunity to explore different creative roles, including:
Performing and character development
Storytelling and writing
Set and stage design
Prop and costume design
Sound and soundscape design
Lighting
Designing interactive moments and audience experiences
Children won't need to choose one role. They'll be encouraged to experiment and discover what they enjoy most.
And you don't have to love performing to be a Young StoryMaker. A child who would rather design, write or make can play just as important a role in creating the final experience.
Creating something together
Immersive experiences are collaborative, so children will learn to develop ideas together, experiment, solve creative problems and see how their individual contributions become part of a larger project.
Each term consists of two six-week blocks, with the group working towards a sharing of their work at the end of the term.
The exact format of the sharing will depend on what the Young StoryMakers create!
